Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum kept his promise and last night gave Koroipita Settlement residents in Naikabula, Lautoka, their much anticipated Christmas gift – electricity.
The residents clapped their hands and jumped with joy when Mr Sayed-Khaiyum flipped the switch and turned on the power.
In October this year, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum visited the settlement and assured the residents they would have access to electricity before Christmas.
It was part of the Rural Electrification Project.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: “When we were here some months back, we did say that we’ll have electricity on, we were able to say that to you because we had already made a budgetary allocation in the 2018 and 2019 budget.
“Government has a huge focus on rural electrification and connecting people to electricity.
“Electricity is a key component of improving people’s quality of lives in the same way with water, drinkable water, portable water and boiling water for us to be able to live a fulfilling life.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also reminded the residents to pay their electricity bills.
“I’m glad that you have electricity in your individual homes. Please use it wisely, please pay your bills. It’s very important to continue with the use of electricity,” he said.
Koroipita resident, Mouna Bui said it was a Christmas to remember as she had been living without electricity for more than 10 years.
“My husband and I buy a packet of batteries once a week to use our solar light,” she said.
“Now with the electricity, this would make everything for us much easier.”
